Q : At what age should I start training my spaniel

A : We do not recommend that you start training your spaniel at a tender age as this may take a lot of natural ability away from the dog and this can turn him over-reliant on the handler. Basic training such as walking on the lead and sitting to command can start quite early ( around 14 weeks) but no serious training should be considered before the age of six months.

Q : How can I stop my spaniel chasing.
A : I recommend that you go back to basics. Get your dog absolutely on the stop whistle. Do not offer your dog any dummy's or picking up work until this basic steadiness is re-installed. If all else fails try a check cord.

Q : How can I correct my Spaniels poor delivery

A : Very often a poor delivery stems from lack of trust between dog and handler. This may have been caused because the dog is hand shy or caused by the trainer snatching at the dummy in early lessons. Keep your eye on your dog when sent for a retrieve always being ready and able to take the retrieve immediately. Stand with your back to a wall or fence so that the dog cannot circle around you. Encourage your dog to lift it head by giving the sit command and pat your own chest. Praise your dog after you have taken the dummy not before. Never snatch the dummy from your dogs mouth. If you think that your dog is hand shy, keep your hands behind your back until he is right up to you.
